Routes into Languages aims to increase and widen participation in language study in higher education, and to support the national role of HE languages as a motor of economic and civic regeneration. It will foster closer collaboration between the secondary, FE and HE sectors of education, piloting different models of collaborative activity based on regional partnerships. It will seek to increase the numbers of first-language English students taking translation/interpreting courses, and help widen the range of languages offered on those courses. And it will support HEIs in developing their languages curricula in the areas of community languages, enterprise, and engagement with major international events. The components of the proposal will be woven together by the key partners to amplify their impact and to support the strategic aim of improving the take-up of languages in Higher Education.
The South West Routes into Languages Consortium will be led by the University of the West of England and the project director will be Irene Wilkie, who is also the Comenius SW regional manager, so the two projects will be able to complement and support each other. As well as UWE , the South West consortium will involve 8 other HEIs in the region – the Universities of Bristol , Bath, Bath Spa , Gloucestershire , Exeter, Plymouth, the Combined Universities of Cornwalland the College of St Mark and St John. The project will offer a wide range of activities including masterclasses, language days, competitions, business links, video conferences and much more. So expect to hear from us and watch this space!
VIDEO DIARY COMPETITION
We are aware that many schools, and indeed individual students, enjoy working with digital video and are capable of producing some excellent material. Consequently we have decided to launch this competition. Students between the ages of 11-18, in full time education are invited to submit a video diary of a visit abroad. The competition will be judged in two categories 11- 14and 15 – 18. The prize for the best entry in each category will be a digital video camera, and runners up will receive certificates of commendation. The deadline for submission, details of how to submit entries, and the rules of the competition are available in the flyer below.
Win a cash prize and showcase what your school/college is doing
In order to offer an incentive for more schools to engage with the international business agenda, Routes into Language SW is launching a competition which will be open to all school and colleges in the region. If your school/college is doing anything innovative we would like to hear from you.
Schools/colleges are invited to submit a description of a project which they have undertaken in the academic year 2007 – 2008 which involves links with either a business abroad, or a business in this country which uses languages.
